Wenn jemand so produzieren kann, dass sich auch jüngere Sänger anhören wie lebensweise Greise, dann T Bone Burnett. John Mellencamp wurde mit 30 Grossvater, und als er 42 war, erlitt er seinen ersten Herzinfarkt. Sein Leben lang hat Mellencamp darum gebettelt und gesungen, wie Bob Dylan und Bruce Springsteen anerkannt zu werden, als erfahrene, dunkle Stimme aus den Urgründen Amerikas. Als er 58 Jahre alt war, hat T Bone Burnett, der Produzent, seinen Wunsch erfüllt.

Bei dem Album „No Better Than This“ wurde auf sämtlichen „neumodischen Schnickschnack“ aus einem halben Jahrhundert Aufnahmetechnik verzichtet. Mellencamp wandelt hier auf den Spuren von Howlin‘ Wolf, dem jungen Elvis Presley und Robert Johnson. Die Aufnahmen mit der excellent besetzten Begleitcombo u.a. mit Mac Ribot (Gitarre/ Banjo), David Roe (Bass), Jay Bellerose (Drums/ Percussion) und Miriam Sturm (Violine) entstanden an mehreren Aufnahmeorten mit Originaltechnik. So spielten sie beispielsweise in den legendären Sun-Studios in Memphis, oder im Zimmer 404 des Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, wo Robert Johnson im November 1936 u.a. sein legendäres „Dust My Broom“ aufnahm.

Mellencamp’s einzigartiges Experiment möchte ich als geglückt bezeichnen. Die Stücke bewegen sich zwischen Folk, Blues, Pre-Rock’n’Roll und Country. Sicher mag der Sound manchen erstmal irritieren, wer sich allerdings auf die Scheibe einlässt, wird wunderschöne Songperlen entdecken, vorgetragen mit viel Soul in der rauen Stimme. Wie eine Botschaft aus längst vergangener Zeit. Der schönste Song auf dem Album ist für mich persönlich „Save Some Time To Dream“: „Try to keep your mind open/ And accept your mistakes/ Save some time for living/ And always question your faith/ Could it be that this is all there is?/ Could it be that there is nothing more at all?/ Save some time to dream/ Cause your dream might save us all“.

    1. Gern geschehen! „No Better Than This“ enthält grossartige Musik und tolle Songs, die für mich mit zum Besten gehören, das Mellencamp je aufgenommen hat.

  3. Dieses Album mag etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig sein für Leute, die John Mellencamp vorwiegend aus den frühen Achtzigern mit Songs wie “Hurts So Good”, “Jack And Diane” und “Small Town” kennen. Zwar gefällt mir auch der “alte” straight rockorientierte Mellencamp, doch finde ich seinen allmählichen musikalischen Wandel seit dem “Lonesome Jubilee” Album hin zu Americana, Roots Rock und Blues trotzdem sehr gelungen.

    Seine interessante raue Stimme verdankt er dem Kettenrauchen. Seine Theorie, daß dies gesundheitsmäßig okay sei, solange man nicht trinkt, ist allerdings eher sonderbar. Egoistischerweise hoffe ich als Fan gleichwohl, daß dies zumindest in seinem Fall nicht zu einer zweiten, möglicherweise tödlichen Herzepisode führt.

    1. Natürlich ist es gefährlich, eine Liedersammlung mit einem solchen Titel zu versehen. Die dreizehn Songs auf „No Better Than This“ sind vor allem Folk-, Blues- und Country-Standards, so richtig rockig will es nicht werden. Es herrscht immer ein wenig Tristesse. Ein bisschen mehr Tempo? Mit zwei Ausnahmen Fehlanzeige. John Mellencamp möchte keinen Spass verbreiten, definitiv nicht! Hier möchte jemand sein Herz ausschütten – und das macht er wirklich gut!

    1. Perhaps my favorite album by John Mellencamp, because all of the studio gloss, production values, and hormonal silliness that polluted some of his earlier work are gone. This is just a group of people in a room making live music.

      2. For me is beside „The Lonesome Jubilee“ and „Freedom’s Road“ „No Better Than This“ the most convincing Mellenkamp work. Interesting that you mention Phil Alvin. I don’t know his solowork very well, but I followed his brother Dave after The Blasters a little. For me are not all of albums arememorable, but I love the rumble of his voice, when he sings some american classics like on „Public Domain“.

      3. I’m a big Blaster, Alvin Bros fan. Dave is prolific with some very good albums under his belt. Phil’s first two albums ‚Unsung Stories‘ and ‚County Fair 2000‘ would be right up your alley. Highly recommend to you especially ‚Unsung Stories‘. here’s one for you Fox. Mellencamp produced the Blasters ‚Hard Line‘ album. Fantastic! How’s that for a connection to your post?

      4. I listened to Phil Alvin’s „Unsung Stories“. Sounds like a excellent combination of grass roots sensibility with New Orleans Jazz and Sun Ra.

      5. It’s all that and more. Both Brothers have a real sense of where a lot of this music comes from and always give credit.. Phil is a big blues guy. He hung out with Bear Hite from Canned Heat who turned him onto all those old obscure blues guys. Phil was the one who got me into Lightn‘ Hopkins. Sun Ra? Pretty cool huh?
