Die Liverbirds aus Liverpool, der Heimatstadt der Beatles, waren eine reine Mädchenband. Anfänglich waren die Kollegen und die Manager skeptisch, ob die Mädels überhaupt Musik machen konnten. Doch ihr Sound zwischen Beat und Rhythm & Blues überzeugte alle. Bereits 1964 tourten sie als Profi-Combo durch Grossbritannien. Engagements im „Star-Club“ festigten den Ruf der Liverbirds als hervorragende Live-Band. Diese Girl-Group war wahrscheinlich die ersten Frauenband überhaupt, die nicht nur sangen, sondern auch ihre eigenen Instrumente auf der Bühne spielen konnten.
Eine Anekdote erzählt von einem skurilen Vorfall: Als den Kinks ihre Gitarren gestohlen wurden, halfen die Liverbirds mit ihren Instrumenten aus, damit ihre männlichen Kollegen den Song „You Really Got Me“ aufnehmen konnten. Die Liverbirds waren sehr von dem Sound des Mississippi-Gitarristen Bo Diddley angetan. Sie hatten gleich mehrere Nummern von dem R&B-Mann mit der viereckigen Gitarre gecovert. Die Bassistin Mary McGlory heiratete später Frank Dostal, den Sänger, der deutschen Beat-Band The Rattles, die aus Hamburg kamen.

The Liverbirds belonged from 1963 to Merseybeat scene. John Lennon, who saw them there a short time later, claimed: Girls with guitars? That doesn’t work together.

The Liverbirds were one of the first female rock bands, if not the first ever. And the four girls made pretty fast beat music. „Penaut Butter“ was probably their biggest hit. I like the drummer in the video!

The clip is from the german music program Beat-Club. I don’t think they were miming. The Liverbirds were a good live band ( they played in the Cavern Club and in the Star-Club and opened for Chuck Berry at his Germany tour). 1995 they did some reunion concerts. Pamela Birch died 2009 and Valerie Ann Gell in 2016.

Know about Beat-Club, Herr Fox. Picked up a neat 2CD set when I lived in Mainz for a year.

I (born 53) remember well „Beat-Club“. The program ran once a month on Saturday afternoon in German TV. In addition to the music we were also interested in the presenter Uschi Nerke. She was dressed more and more daring, once strapless, once deeply decollitates, often in super short miniskirt. Best wishes to Australia …
