So ein harmonisches Album hatte 1976 wohl kaum jemand noch von Lou Reed erwartet. Nachdem er das schier unanhörbare „Metal Machine Music“ veröffentlicht hatte und dazu etliche verrückte Interviews gegeben hatte, wurde er von vielen Hörern abgeschrieben. Damals klang jede Platte von Lou Reed ganz anders als die vorherige, niemand wusste, wohin er sich weiter entwickeln würde.

Doch mit „Coney Island Baby“ schien Reed endlich Boden unter den Füssen gefunden zu haben. Die acht Songs auf dem Album sind lässige, eingängige Melodien, die freilich nie banal werden. Dafür sorgt schon das gewisse Lou-Reed-Extrakt, das auch hier nicht zu überhören ist, und dass die Texte nicht bissig wären, kann man ebenfalls nicht behaupten. Aber dieses Lou-Reed-Extrakt dominiert nicht. Stattdessen gibt es mal Melancholie in ihrer musikalischen Form (das einfach schöne „Coney Island Baby“), mal swingt diese Melancholie und hat eine unwiderstehliche Melodie im Gepäck („Crazy Feeling“), mal ist es Rock’n’Roll à la Lou Reed ( „Ooohhh Baby“), und dann wieder erinnert es von Ferne an bodenständigen Folk („Nobody’s Business“). All das passt zusammen, man kann das Album am Stück hören, einfach so, weil man gerade etwas lässig-lockeres ohne unnötiges Gefuchtel hören will.

    1. This is a gem! Lou Reed at his most beautiful. Mellow and romantic. This album is often overlooked by the glamtastics „Transformer“, „Berlin“ etc. but it more than holds its own.

    1. Gern geschehen! Ich mag „Coney Island Baby“. Der flockig-locker-samtige-Sound ist weitgehend auf der fröhlichen Seite. Erinnert mich an ein Road-Movie.

  5. Love this record Fox. Because we are on the same page so often I was listening to this a couple weeks back. So many good cuts on it. I was following Lou’s career back then and know all about his releases. My buddy even bought the ‚Metal Machine‘ album. Saved me the dough. I always anticipate ‚Charlies Girl‘ after ‚Crazy Feeling‘. Good stuff Fox.

    1. Love this record too, CB! Not only because it can be easily listen, (This will not be able with the „Metal Machine“ album). There are also a few outstanding songs on it: „Kicks“, for example, with its musical and sound-technical approach still amazes me after years. The title song sounds harmoniously for Reed conditions, but it’s clever arranged and in terms of dramaturgy and melody an highlight.

      1. I want to do a take on this but like a few of your takes you beat me to the punch., I might borrow some. The title track is one I dig. I’m pretty sure he’s drawing from his experience. I know he was a big football guy. Love this whole record. Good choice. Sounds good today always a good thing in my book.
