Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin, Lost Time, 2015

Produzent/ Craig Parker Adams, Dave Alvin

Label/ Yep Roc Records

Im akustischen Gospel „If You See My Savior“ singen die Alvins gemeinsam.

      1. Dave and Phil Alvin complement each other perfectly. Dave is a top notch guitarist, he plays a fiery, sparkling solo guitar and is a very smart man in terms of his musicality. Phil has just the right voice and sings the old songs with fervor. I also like their their Big Bill Broonzy tribute album „Common Ground“.

  2. I never heard of them but it sounds great. That rawness on the opening guitar sends shivers down my spine. It sounds like we are in a club listening to them.

    1. The brothers Dave and Phil Alvin are from L.A.’s roots music scene. In the early 80s they were part of the movement with The Blasters. After The Blasters ended, Dave and Phil Alvin stopped working together. While Dave continued to make roots rock, was Phil mainly focused on his studies. 2014 they made the album „Common Ground“ together with songs by the blues legend Big Bill Broonzy. „Lost Time“ is basically the continuation of the bow. The song „World’s In A Bad Condition“ was first sung as a gospel by the Golden Gate Quartet in 1930, Dave and Phil Alvin’s version is based on that of Tampa Red (1938).

    1. I like almost all The Blasters and Dave Alvin records. The brothers proved that blood is indeed thicker than the lager backstage at their concerts. „Lost Time“ has some new but respectful interpretation of traditional blues music.

    1. Yep, thank you! The Alvin Brothers are one of American roots music’s best kept secrets. I love their music since the 1980s and The Blasters, an affectionately remembered rockabilly outfit which always had a folk song or two in its repertoire. BTW: CB will show up!

  3. Man does that sound good! They just throw all the music they love into the pot and come up with this. Without a doubt it is some the music I love best. Hard for me to get out of this gear when I hear it. I love Dave’s guitar. Music Enthusiast sent me over. He’s a pretty sharp cookie. He’s figured out that I dig these guys. Good choice Fox.

    1. I was sure CB gonna like this! „Lost Time“ is a tribute album. There are four interpretations of Big Joe Turner songs, then something by Leroy Carr, Hubby Ledbetter, Otis Rush etc. I particularly like version of „Rattlesnakin ‚Daddy“ a song by Blind Boy Fuller. And of course the first-class „Please Please Please“ by James Brown. „World`s In A Bad Condition“ has the edge that I like from Dave Alvin’s solo records. The lady in the video is Lisa Pankratz. She is a fantastic drummer.

      1. Just more good music from those guys. When they first branched out I think I picked up Phil’s solo album before I got Daves. They have always gave credit to their hero’s. They really are good Fox. Up there near the top of my list. Thing is so many people dont know them. Good on you for getting the word out.

      2. It was in the early 80s when I heard first something from The Blasters. There were a lot of interesting bands at that time in the roots music scene in the USA like Green On Red, The Gun Club, X and Los Lobos.

Dave’s reflection on the ancient American styles like blues, country and folk is something of the best because he always has the right feeling for the songs. „Public Domain“ is an absolutely great album. There are sunsets, campfires, starry skies, wild rivers, mighty mountains and a good sip of whiskey …

      3. I remember when Steve Berlin left the Blasters to join Los Lobos. I missed his sax but they the music didnt suffer.
Yes that’s a great album (one of many). Phil’s Un Sung Stories is a fave also. So is County Fair if I want to keep going.
