Die Platte ist nicht schlecht, hat aber den Nachteil, dass Themen wie die Reagan-Thatcher-Connection weit von der Gegenwart entfernt sind und somit leicht verstaubt anmuten. Trotzdem: viele dieser Songs sind fast schon Klassiker und auch in manch anderen Songs gibt es noch einiges zu entdecken. Zum Beispiel die Tatsache, dass Robin Hood und seine Mannen ja eigentlich eine Schwulengang waren oder dass Nixon und Hitler in trauter Verbundenheit einer Satansveranstaltung beiwohnten. Es war eben schon immer die Stärke der Mekons, britischen Humor kunstvoll mit politischem Bewusstsein zu verknüpfen.

Trotz aller Patina gehören alte Mekons Scheiben immer noch zu den Platten, die man immer wieder gerne hört, ohne sich vor Peinlichkeit gruseln zu müssen. Sally Timms hat eine dieser britischen Frauenfolkstimmen, die genauso schmeichelnd ist wie sie Unerbittlichkeit und eine gewisse Amüsiertheit über die Weltbefreiungsideen der Jungs zum Ausdruck bringt. Sie singt die alte Chauvi-Hymne, „Heart Of Stone“, ohne aus den girls boys zu machen. Muss ich mehr sagen?

  1. Never heard of this or them but it sounds great. It has an early sixties ring to it…I really like this.

    1. I love The Mekons for many years. The came out from the British punk scene and moved later to the States. The founding members are interested in all things musical and the large-and-largely-intact member lineup is still at it today with an energy undiminished through lo these many years. „So Good It Hurts“ could be a good introduction for you. The album contains variety and energy with sharp edged lyrics.

      3. I know…I appreciate it more now than I did then. I was exposed to the mainstream music back then more.
        If I would have heard this in the 80s I would have loved it….VERY good lyric.

    1. The version of „Heart of Stone“ is of course a gem. The interesting thing about The Mekons is less the sound than the way they deal with the material.

      1. The title didn’t register at first and I listened to it not expecting anything certain…I thought this has a great sixties groove to it…when it ended…it registered…really good.

    1. Their last album „Deserted“ shows that the Mekons are not bored and don’t get bored because they are constantly evolving. After the punk rock of the early years they made stylistic metamorphoses in the wide field between country, rock and dub reggae. Today it’s called: Americana. Or simply: folk rock? Folk punk? Anyway: „These twisted folk have laughed more laughs, cried more tears and writ more tunes than you can shake a stick at whilst building a reputation as one of the very best live bands on the planet.“

    1. The Mekons waren irgendwann eine archaische Punk-Band aus dem desolaten Thatcher-England. Seit mehr als 40 Jahren pendeln sie nun zwischen den Polen Linksradikalismus und verachtete Formen von Pop-Musik, zwischen Alkoholismus und Philosophie hin und her. Die Menschen hinter der Band haben auch viele Projekte ganz anderer Art verwirklicht. Manchmal ist das alles ein bisschen ressentimentgeladen und kulturanalytisch. Trotzdem: Es lohnt sich diese Truppe zu entdecken!

    1. I was already a fan of the Mekons when they played punk. The band has lived in the states since 1988 and still makes powerful songs that impress with haunting choruses and stirring melodies and offer a wonderful mix of anarchic hymns, socially critical dramas and touching love songs. Their new album „Exquisite“ has just been released.
