Einst gründeten die Brüder The Blasters aber musikalische Meinungsverschiedenheiten führten 1986 dazu das man sich trennte. Aber eines verband sie immer, die Liebe zum Blues. So kam es dann, das sie 2014 zum ersten Mal wieder zusammen ein Album aufnahmen.

Gemeinsam hauchen sie auf „Common Ground: Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin Play And Sing The Songs Of Big Bill Broonzy“ zwölf Songs aus dem umfangreichen Repertoire des 1958 verstorbenen Blues-Klassikers Big Bill Broonzy neues Leben ein. Ihre Würdigung Broonzys vereint das Beste aus beiden Welten – die so unterschiedlich nicht sind. Schliesslich besteht sogar die angeheuerte Band aus Mitgliedern der Blasters und aus Dave Alvins Liveband. Das Resultat ist kein gut gemeintes Bluesalbum weisser Buben im fortgeschrittenen Alter, sondern schiebt im Geist des zusammen generierten Roots-Rock an, dass es Phils Gesicht wieder ordentlich in Falten legt, wie damals, 1981. Ein paar Songs wie „Stuff They Call Money“ singen die beiden im Duett, den Rest teilt man sich paritätisch. Dave ist der düstere Typ, Phil hat das sonnigere Gemüt.

In der Mischung ergibt das ein grossartiges Blues- und Rock’n’Roll-Album, ohne in die Nähe eines öden Bluesrock zu kommen. Gene Taylor klimpert sein bestes Juke-Joint-Piano, Phil drückt aufs Gas, Dave geht mit oder steht auf der Bremse. Das resultiert in einer Dynamik, die alle zwölf Titel belebt. Die Musik ist dreckig, luftig, sie besitzt jenes Gefühl, das so vielen ähnlichen Alben vollkommen abgeht.

  1. Basiered auf dem Clip klingt dies nach einer super Scheibe. Ich habe gleich ueber meinen Streaming Music Provider aufgerufen, sodass ich sie nicht „vergesse!“

    1. Dieses Album zeigt wie gut sich Dave und Phil Alvin ergänzen. Dave ist ein erstklassiger Gitarrist und auch was seine Musikalität betrifft, ein kluger Kopf. Phil hat die richtige Stimme und erweckt die Songs von Big Bill Broonzy zu neuem Leben.

      Aber auch hier gilt: Weniger ist mehr, denn ein zu stark dosierter Effekt kann den Sound schnell matschig und undifferenziert machen, besonders, wenn man viele Anschläge spielt, was auch beim Blues öfters vorkommt.

Der britische Blues-Rocker Alvin Lee mit seinen rasend schnell gespielten Gitarrenläufen, gehörte zu den Helden meiner Jugendzeit, aber in den frühen 70er Jahren war für mich das Kapitel Alvin Lee und Ten Years After abgeschlossen. Die Brüder Dave und Phil Alvin stammen aus Los Angeles und spielten in den 80er Jahren bei der Rockabilly-Formation The Blasters. Und auch Dave Alvin konnte und kann auf seiner Gitarre loslegen. Punkto Energie und Schnelligkeit steht er dem britischen Alvin Lee nichts nach. Allerdings wage ich zu bezweifeln, ob die beiden je etwas zusammen hervorgebracht hätten.

    Irgendwann werde ich auch darüber schreiben.

    1. Vielen Dank! Ich denke, Big Bill wäre stolz auf dieses Album. Phil ist ein grossartiger Sänger und Dave ist ein ausgezeichneter Gitarrist.

  4. Absolutely right Fox. Everyone should have this music in their repertoire. No question. Like the jazz from Duke, Parker, Armstrong this is music from the beginning. But like you said , it’s „in the sprit of the roots rock‘ and is a „great blues and rock n roll album“. When I talk about being moved by music this is the stuff that does it. I think one of the reasons it does is because it moves Dave and Phil. No pretending here Fox just two brothers and their friends playing and sharing the music they love. We benefit from that. 307 words that describe what this albums is about. Great stuff Fox.

    1. Thanks, CB. I own a couple of Big Bill Broonzy albums, and also play a few of his songs on the guitar. What Dave and Phil are doing with Big Bill’s music is less country blues and more country rock. A few songs are played too fast, if you compare them with Broonzy’s recordings. But I like the way how they approach this songs that are 80 years or older. The record sound fresh. It’s not a museum show. They enjoy the music. Dave und Phil are not just brothers but also congenial music partners.

      2. Right CB, they are rockers. But „Common Ground“ is not the resurrection of the Alvin brothers, as pleasant as it sounds. They’ve got a little older since the Blasters in the early 80ths and they look a little more rugged now. They knowed exactly what to do with this Big Bill songs, and they did it very well. Their Music has that feeling that so many similar albums completely lack, most of them suffering from what I would call a Clapton’s disease.

      3. I get ya. I really dig their interpretations of these and other songs that they choose to do. They have aged into this stuff even though they have always played it. I also like your last sentence. I like Eric but a little more grease and gravel and I would like him better
