Sie ist eine der grössten Sängerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts und hat so gut wie alles erreicht. Mavis Staples, 1939 geboren als Tochter des legendären Pop Staples und Teil der Staples Singers. Etliche Jahre wirkte ihre Karriere, wie die meisten ihrer noch lebenden Zeitgenossen, richtungslos und uninspiriert, bevor sie das Glück hatte, mit Wilcos Jeff Tweedy, ein weiterer junger Musiker der sich als Rick Rubin versuchte, ein würdiges Album zu schaffen, das ihr den Beginn einer neuen Karriere bescherte.

„You Are Not Alone“ führt Mavis Staples zu ihren Roots zurück: Es ist ein Gospelalbum, auf dem sie etliche alte Kirchensongs anstimmt, die sie schon als Teenager in der Kirche sang. Die tut sie allerdings ohne das zwanghaft euphorische und missionarische Pathos des traditionellen Gospels.

„You Are Not Alone“ ist ein zurückhaltend produziertes, blueslastiges Soulalbum, der Sound klingt so warm und herzlich, als käme er direkt aus den alten Stax-Studios und schenkt der einzigartigen Stimme von Mavis Staples viel Raum – so dass sich die alte Dame nicht mit reiner Vokalkraft in den Vordergrund kreischen muss, sondern sich ganz auf ihr Gefühl verlassen und konzentrieren kann.

    1. Jeff Tweedy war schon der richtige Mann, um die imposante, demnächst 81 Jahre alte Mavis Staples einer neuen Zielgruppe zuzuführen. Wie Rick Rubin bei Johnny Cash hat Tweedy den Sound heruntergestrippt, um der warmen, tiefen Stimme von Staples Raum zu geben. Diese Blues- und Gospel-Songs sind emotional unglaublich berührend.

  2. That sounds so pure and good. I saw Mavis a few years ago open up for Bob Dylan. A down to earth lady and so talented.
    I like when these younger artists work with older ones. Jack White-Lorretta Lynn and Rubin – Cash… They pull something out of them for a new audience…usually going back to the roots.

    1. That’s true. She sounds pure and good. Mavis Staples voice remains a minor miracle and her gospel zeal is fundamentally intact. And Jeff Tweedy’s production is very sympathetic and like all great musicians he recognises that the most the powerful instrument should take centre stage. In this case is it the voice of Mavis Staples.

      Unfortunately, I never saw her live, but I can understand why she appeared in the opening act for Bob Dylan. Bob said the first time he heard her sing, „That just made my hair stand up, listening to that. I mean, that just seemed like, that’s the way the world is.“

      1. She was really open with the audience. She told everyone she once dated „Bobby“ which everyone loved.
        I love this recording of her because it’s so real. The imtimacy is a great thing.

      2. I think this and the next album „One True Vine“ produced by Jeff Tweedy are very good. There was surely no time spent in the production of these records worrying about how to construct it as a piece of art. It is simply someone supremely talented trusting herself, her gift and her judgment.The songs and the sound together represent a kind of self-portrait of Mavis Staples.

    1. Tweedy did with Mavis Staples what Rubin did with Johnny Cash. He stripped down the sound to give her voice more space. Ben Harper brings back the good old soul with a band and background vocals. However, the real miracle is, that this big lady still exudes bravery at the age of eighty.

      1. I like that stripped down style. It worked for Cash big time. Giving „her voice more space“ is exactly what Tweedy did. If you get a chance catch the doc ‚Mavis. Worth a watch. great moment where she has a reunion with Levon Helm.

    1. Zu Mavis Staples Stimme muss man nicht viel sagen. Einfach grossartig, wie viel Soul und Power die Frau aus der Kehle zaubert.

    1. Mavis Staples war zuerst bei den Staple Singers, der Gospeltruppe ihres Vaters, des Predigers und Gitarristen Roebuck „Pops“ Staples. Sie hat mehrere Soloplatten veröffentlicht; in dem Indie-Label Anti-Records sind nicht weniger als sieben Platten von ihr erschienen, drei davon produziert von Jeff Tweedy. Mavis Staples ist eine ganz grosse Sängerin. Die beiden Alben „You Are Not Alone“ und „One True Vine“ kann ich Dir uneingeschränkt empfehlen.
