Seine berühmteste Rolle war zugleich seine einzige echte Hauptrolle. In dem Film „Paris, Texas“ (1984) von Wim Wenders stolpert er sprachlos durch die Wüste. Ein Mann ohne Gedächtnis, der sich langsam seine Vergangenheit zurückerobert, nur um am Ende auf eine glückliche Zukunft zu verzichten.

Neben der Schauspielerei war der vor drei Jahren verstorbene Harry Dean Stanton auch als talentierter Sänger und Gitarrist aktiv. Er liebte Country, Pop, Jazz, Tex-Mariachi-Musik und Tex-Mex. Anders als auf „Partly Fiction“ (2014) hören wir ihn hier mit einer Band, deren Mitglieder früher mit The Kingbees, Stray Cats, Doobie Brothers oder Iggy Pop spielten. Mit Gusto servieren diese Cracks schmissige Versionen von Chuck Berrys „Promised Land“ oder Dylans „I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight“. Stanton singt, spielt akustische Gitarre und Mundharmonika. Eine feine Gesangsleistung liefert er in „Across the Borderline“ ab. Der Song (von Ry Cooder/Jim Dickinson/John Hiatt) passt zu Stantons Filmkarriere. „October 1993“ enthält eine Kombination aus Studio- und Livetracks. Letztere stammen aus Los Angeles berühmtem Troubadour-Club. Gerade hier manifestiert sich eine Vorliebe für zündenden Rock’n’Roll. Man höre sich bloss „Miss Froggie“ an, ein von heulender Bluesharp und schneidenden Gitarrenriffs dominierter Party-Kracher. Erst mit dem mexikanischen Folksong „Cancion Mixteca“ kehrt etwas Ruhe ein. Dank dem Omnivore-Label bekommen wir eine weitere Gelegenheit, an Harry Dean Stantons Leidenschaft für Musik und Gesang teilzuhaben.

Also, das mit der einzigen Hauptrolle hat gestimmt bis 2017, als der Film „Lucky“ zum ersten Mal auf einem Festival gezeigt wurde, Harry Dean Stanton hat ihn nicht mehr gesehen … er ist ein halbes Jahr später mit 91 Jahren gestorben. Solltest Du den Film tatsächlich noch nie gesehen haben… ich finde, es geht was ab im Leben, wenn man ihn nicht kennt! Einer der berührendsten Filme meines Lebens mit einem 90jährigen Stenton, der einfach unbeschreiblich ist und dann dieses Lied…zum Weinen schön!
    Ich glaube, das war die Hauptrolle seines Lebens, die Essenz…das was übrig bleibt!

    1. Vielen Dank für Deinen Hinweis! Den Film habe ich vor zwei Jahren im TV gesehen. Harry Dean Stantons Abschied in Unterhose ist grossartig und nicht ohne Galgenhumor und existenziellem Sarkasmus. „Lucy“ ist eine Art fiktives Gegenstück zu Sophie Hubers Stanton-Dokumentation „Partly Fiction“, in der der Porträtierte zwar wenig spricht, aber viel singt, Roy Orbisons „Blue Bayou“ etwa oder Fred Neils „Everybody’s Talkin’“, das alles zu sagen scheint, was man über ihn wissen muss: „Everybody’s talkin’ at me/ I don’t hear a word they’re sayin’/ Only the echoes of my mind.“: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGbMKrflung

  3. Intriguing…I know him as an actor, of course (Paris, Texas is a wonderful film, so is Lucky) but I never knew that he was a musician. I see Skunk Baxter on the album cover. He’s a great musician as well. I love „I’ll be Your Baby Tonight.“ I hear The Band rattling around in there, but Stanton and The Cheap Dates are more joyful. Good stuff.

    1. I discovered Harry Dean Stanton as a musician after watching the documentary „Partly Fiction“ by Sophie Huber. Stanton may never be considered as a great singer, but he brings an authenticity to classics like „Promised Land“ or „Across the Borderline“ that’s hard to beat.

    1. Pretty much anything that Harry Dean Stanton has done is worth a look. The „October 1993“ album is very good. I also like the „Partly Fiction“ soundtrack even the recordings are rough and edgy. If you have the chance watch the movie. I also recommend „Lucky“. It’s Stanton’s last, unvarnished, and truthful character study.

  5. Musik, die Spass macht! Insbesondere bei den Live-Aufnahmen im Troubador geht richtig gut die Post ab. Wohingegen ich mich nach dem Ansehen eines Fotos an Stanton in „Paris, Texas“ erinnern konnte, hatte ich keine Ahnung, dass er auch ein talentierter Musiker war.

    1. Dass Harry Dean Stanton auch ein Musiker war, habe ich erst durch den Porträtfilm „Partly Fiction“ von Sophie Huber erfahren. Stanton tingelte mit seiner Band jahrelang durch die Bars rund um L.  A. und sang romantische Folk- und Texmex-Songs. Trotz mehrerer Angebote nahm er aber nie eine Platte auf. Schade eigentlich, denn Harry war ein begabter Musiker und die Lieder wirken nicht kitschig, weil er sie so innig und ehrlich interpretiert.

  6. Just watched ‚Missouri Breaks‘ and then you bust out this take. Never took the plunge (didnt know he had albums) but have always enjoyed when I heard him play and sing. Thanks for the heads up Fox. Again!

    1. Harry Dean Stanton is one of the best cast in „Missouri Breaks“ for me. As a musician, I first got to know him through Sophie Huber’s film „Partly Fiction“. He played a lot with his band in clubs around L.A. but never recorded a record or CD. „October 1993“ is the only recording beside the soundtrack of „Partly Fiction“. I like those wistful ballads. Stanton’s singing is fragile as Chet Baker, he touches you, like in his film roles, because they never look acted.

        I seen a doc on Harry and if I remember correctly he sang and played a bit in it. I’m going to check more of him out. Thanks. The Chet comparison sounds right.

      2. I remember „Missouri Breaks“ has some good camera shots in nature, but I found the whole movie it a little weird but also a bit boring. Maybe I should look it again? Anyway, Harry Dean Stanton convinced me also in his last film „Lucky“. If he doesn’t already saw it, this may be a little fable for CB. Wish you a happy easter.

    1. Yes, the cover looks good. On the picture are next to Harry Dean Stanton, Jamie James, Slim Jim Phantom (from the Stray Cats), Jeff Baxter (from The Doobie Brothers) and Tony Sales (from Tin Machine). There’s a lot of energy here.
