Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters and The Beastie Boys together must be great. I saw Sonic Youth 1989 in NYC. Later they became more popular. But I think they never really made music for the masses.
You are right. They made music for themselves. That is what makes them really great. No matter what the response of the market is. Of course, they wanted commercial success as well but not to the point they would compromise their music.

Fell in love with the Sonic Youth when I saw them in Manila in 1995 with the Foo Fighters and The Beastie Boys. Pure talent!
