Wer 2011 auf diesem Album von dem 61-jährigen Tom Waits Altersmilde erwartet hatte, wurde bereits im Opener eines Besseren belehrt: „Chicago“ ist eine furiose Fusion aus Minimal Music und Bluespunk, getrieben von einer fiesen Orgel, glühenden R’n’B-Bläsern und den dürren Licks von Keith Richards und Marc Ribot. Und wenn Waits im Titeltrack das aufzählt, was alles „bad“ ist an ihr und ihm, also weshalb sie so gut zusammenpassen, ist man längst schon aufgesprungen – und geniesst die 45 Minuten währende Höllenfahrt durch seinen grotesken Kosmos. „I’m the detective up late / I’m the blood on the floor/ I’m the mattress in the back / I’m the old gunnysack/ No good you say?/ ha, ha, ha .. that’s good enough for me.“
So läuft es weiter und weiter mit diesem Album. Tom Waits zieht alle Register, von den schmutzigen Barjazz-Balladen und den Beatnik-Posen seiner Anfänge über verzweifelten Rockabilly, schroffen Vorkriegssblues, bizarr verfremdetem Tin-Pan-Alley-Kitsch bis hin zu schwindelerregenden Experimenten. Auch die Soundpalette ist dank Waits‘ Sinn für ausgefallene Instrumente und Geräusche reich und seine Texte von schwarzhumoriger Schärfe. Auf „Bad As Me“ unternimmt Tom Waits nicht den Versuch, sich neu zu erfinden – aber er bleibt unvorhersehbar und kompromissloslos. Altersstarrsinnig eben. Ein tolles Album.

One of my favourite Tom Waits albums, this one. I actually pulled it from the shelf the other day after thinking it’s been 8 years already!

For me has „Bad As Me“ all of the elements of a classic Tom Waits album like „Swordfishtrombones“ or „Rain dogs“. There are a few consistent themes throughout including age and nostalgia. One of the highlights, for me, is „Chicago“ which features lyrics that seem to fall in line with the depression era and are accompanied by a fantastic, railroad-like rhythm. Another highlight is the titletrack (some kind of lovesong) where he has a powering form and rocking harder than he has done for years. Yep, it’s already 8 years since the album came out. Tom Waits turned 70 on the 7. December 2019.

Some people don’t like his music. I’m not one of them. Good cut with the word „Bad“ in it.

This guy doesn’t stop making good music. The gin soaked lullaby of „Kiss Me“ and the ballad „Raised Right Men“ are just great: „A good women can make a diamond out of a measly lump of coal/ You need the patience of a glacier/ If you can wait that long/ Open up his window and admit it that you’re wrong.“

Tom Waits is also interesting in his age. He flaunts the faults of all of us in ways that allow us to change them or simply rejoice in our bad ways…at least to the sound of good music.
