Jim Jarmusch lässt seinen Film „Down By Law“ mit einer mal nach links, mal nach rechts fahrenden Kamera beginnen und übersetzt Tom Waits‘ Song „Jockey Full Of Bourbon“, der zu diesem nervösen Absuchen der schäbigen Häuserfassaden von New Orleans erklingt, in poetisch verdichtete Bilder. „Hey little bird, fly away home“, krächzt Waits, „Your house is on fire, your children are alone.“

„Down by Law“ hat mir Mitte der 80er Jahre sehr gefallen. Genau genommen war ich hin und weg, als die ersten Takte von „Jockey Full of Bourbon“ eingesetzt hatten und diese unglaubliche Stimme zu erzählen anhob.  „Rain Dogs“ von Tom Waits war damals eine meiner Insel-Platten. Auch viele LPs – und CDs – später wundere ich mich noch immer über diese Stimme, die eigentlich ein Instrument ist, das mal im rauchigen Bariton haucht, mal hart an der Schmerzgrenze dröhnt, krächzt und scheppert, mal mit Megafon bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verzerrt wird. Blechern klingt Waits dann, wie überhaupt das Blech eine grosse Rolle spielt bei seinen andern selbstgebastelten Instrumenten. Auch Mundharmonika, Posaune oder Klavier tönen, als quetsche er aus ihnen in ähnlich reduktionistischer Weise das Letzte heraus, wie Charles Bukowski es aus seinem angeblich hundert Wörter umfassenden Vokabular getan hat.

    1. This song is from the „Rain Dogs“ album. Yep, sounds a bit like Los Lobos with those guitars and drums. But there are other good quality musicians here, including Marc Ribot on guitar.

      „Down By Law“ is a great Jarmusch film with outstanding performances by Tom Waits, John Lurie, and Roberto Benigni (Benigni at his best). I also like „Mystery Train“ and „Night On Earth“.

      2. Thanks! The prison scene is great. Tom Waits as a drunkard! John Lurie as a pimp! Roberto Benigni as a murderer! A road movie without roads! I especially liked Benigni: I’m just saying „strange mother my mother“.

      4. The last part of „Night On Earth“ is great. The last episode with Matti Pellonpää as a taxi driver pays homage to the Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. I’ve seen almost all of his films and fell in love with Kati Outinen.

      6. Kaurismäki gets you on this lonesome rider feeling. He don’t make mainstream films, each film has something special. My recommendation „The Man Without A Past“.
